A mobile shopping makeover for Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, Free People, Nuuly, and more.

URBN is a portfolio of global consumer brands that includes Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, Free People, Nuuly, BHLDN, Terrain, and the Vetri Family. They initially approached us in 2014 for assistance in launching their flagship Urban Outfitters app for Android. Although URBN has a strong tech team, they did not have Android developers on staff at the time and did not plan to expand their team for the Urban Outfitters Android launch initiative.

Mercury assigned a team of developers, designers, and a project manager to collaborate with the URBN product and technical teams on the original UO Android engagement. This team utilized an Agile development methodology throughout the project and its subsequent update cycles. On the iOS side, Mercury provided staff augmentation services to their existing iOS team, placing between one to three developers full-time directly (and remotely) on the URBN team. When URBN requires additional application design or development services in a hurry, they reach out to Mercury.

Retail systems are notoriously difficult to navigate. Due to URBN’s extensive history, their customer base was divided between a legacy CRM and a more modern system. This created difficulties in the account sign-in process.

Results

Our partnership with URBN helped transform their mobile retail presence across multiple iconic brands. On Android, we crafted engaging shopping experiences from the ground up, delivering UX/UI design and full development that resonates with URBN's fashion-forward audience. 

For iOS, we engineered a seamless native checkout solution to power transactions across Anthropologie, Free People, and Urban Outfitters—making mobile shopping as stylish as the brands themselves. Our work extended beyond traditional retail, including innovative iPad experiences and restaurant app concepts that showcase URBN's expanding digital horizons.

For Nuuly, we helped create and deploy their warehouse fulfillment systems across both fixed kiosk stations as well as hand-held mobile phone applications that helped them scale and optimize their warehouse operations. Then, when they opened another warehouse across the country, we helped replicate that solution across multiple fulfillment centers.
